Tillman was part of a combat patrol that was ambushed at 7:30 p.m. local time by 10 to 20 attackers armed with mortars and small arms near Khowst, Afghanistan, on April 22, 2004. In the ensuing firefight, Tillman was accidentally killed by fire from his own unit.
